Wisdom and delight from the eccentric character of Elwood P. Dowd, played by Jimmy Stewart in the timeless classic movie, Harvey. Elwood drives everyone crazy because he insists on being happy. Tune your ear to Mr. Stewart’s famous drawl:
Every day’s a beautiful day.
My mother used to say, ‘In this world, Elwood, you must be oh, so smart, or oh, so pleasant.’ I recommend pleasant. You can quote me.
I always have a wonderful time wherever I am, whomever I’m with.
Each time Elwood was asked: “Is there something I can do for you, Mr. Dowd?” he replied:
What did you have in mind?
My very favorite:
I wrestled with reality for thirty-five years, doctor, and I’m glad to say I’ve won out over it.”
Starting Tuesday out right, again, or still…
Dear God, let me be the unique me I am today, just as I am. Let me be pleasant, and if not pleasant, let me be quiet, and let me realize the priceless power of simply enjoying myself and others. Amen. So it is.

I hope one day I, too win out over reality! “Harvey” is one of my favorite movies because I love Elwood P Dowd’s take on life; wish I were more like him.
