In Need of Help With a Bookshelf Dilemma

I’m following up on Brenda’s excellent suggestion that I ask for help with the stuck glass door on one of my bookshelves. The oak shelf above has bowed downward just enough to prevent the door from being opened on the shelf containing my collection of Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books.

Also trapped are Jan Karon’s Mitford series and the Tarquin Hall mysteries set in India. All favored books that I might want to re-read. (I think I hear the characters calling from the shelf: Save us, save us!)

I have studied the shelves at length and, sadly, the only idea presenting itself is to tape the glass and then break it. Although I do think it is worth a shot to wait until I’m using the air-conditioner a whole lot in the middle of summer, thereby drying the air and possibly shrinking the wood.

Does anyone have an idea of how to get the door open without destruction?

For writers and other creatives, I recommend two compelling essays:

Notes from a Newbie, by Linda Dindzans, published on the ACFW blog.

“To experience His Rest, I must approach my writing as a prayer and not a performance. A prayer written for and to Him and for and to my readers.” ~ Linda Dindzans, author

Practice is Not a Means to an End, by Steven Pressfield on his blog, Writing Wednesdays.

“A practice is a discipline. It’s not just the work or the art, it’s the state of mind we occupy when we pursue the work or the art.” ~ Steven Pressfield, author of The War of Art.

I just learned that the Kindle Edition of Little Town, Great Big Life is priced at $1.99!

Readers should hold on to their hearts; losing them to these unforgettable characters is a real possibility. ~ Publishers Weekly.

  1. Hello my dear friend. You might find a furniture refinisher to help you to unstuck your cabinet, they have the skill and tools and unstuck furniture. (I used to flip furniture) And waiting until warmer and drier weather will help too. Hope you get it fixed! Love ya!

  2. Hi CurtissAnn … you might call a carpenter to take a look. He might have an idea how to fix the problem without breaking the glass or other damage.
Hope all is good with you!  Mary Scott

  3. CurtisAnn- Bob says to take all the weight off the top of the bookshelf. Then use a bar of soap on the groove where the glass moves on the shelf.
    Love ya- SuzAnne
