On the Porch Paying Attention

I am writing this from my iPhone. Amazing. I’ve been doing a morning post on Facebook and thought I’d like to post it here. In this way I am easing myself back to writing, squeezing it in at this busy time of change in my life, in hopes of keeping hold of my life. We’ll see how my efforts turn out.

It seems to get quieter on the porch as summer slips away. Crickets in rhythm, a bird giving a single chirp. Darker longer, and definitely cooler this morning, although the fan is welcome, as is running my hands through the lavender to release the scent against mosquitoes. Wet, and pleasant to hear the drips from the roof.

I pay attention deliberately to push aside thoughts of yesterday and worries of tomorrow. Attention lets me savor the moment in this lovely place and time. I’m reminded of a wisdom from Julia Cameron: “The quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight. The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention.”

  1. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”
