RIP Our Dear Fancy

Gone but not forgotten, our dear cat, Fancy. Ancient of days at twenty years of age, Fancy lived a good long life and gave much to her humans.

Fancy, the manx, was born in rural Oklahoma and came to her family when only weeks old. Not quite ready to leave her mother, she would climb up Bigstreetrod and root in his thick beard, then fall asleep on his shoulder. Her name of Fancy was quite apt. She knew her greatness and glory, and that she was not like other cats. She never formed friendships with cats; making humans her tribe. At the age of six years, she decided she was no longer living outside with the riff-raft and became a total housecat. She never once showed any inclination to go outside the house again. The door could be left open, and she would sit and look out from the safe distance of four feet.

Already advanced in age, when she was uprooted to move to Alabama, she nevertheless made the annoying journey and settled into the new home, where she occasionally fought an outside cat bravely through the closed window. She kept her human company when other family members were slow in moving.

When we look back through the years, we remember Fancy and all that she gave us, many times when we did not realize. There were sick days for her human, and she lay close to her human each afternoon for a nap. She also was always close on wakeful nights. She lived a life of highest dedication (if not always shown) to her humans. She will be sorely missed.

Fancy is survived by Punk, M&M, both from Oklahoma, and Miss Kitty, a debutante of Alabama.

  1. CurtissAnn, that was an absolutely beautiful tribute to your dear Fancy, it left me in tears. I’m glad you and Fancy had so many wonderful years together. I firmly believe when I go on to my reward after leaving this earth, I’ll be met inside the gates of heaven by a passel of well loved pets who’ve gone on before me; it wouldn’t be heaven without them. Hopefully, they are welcoming Fancy as we speak! Hugs, dear friend, I know the pain and wish I could be there in person to sit and cry a spell with you!

    • Dearest Nola, I did feel a bit teary this morning, when at the kitchen table we shared a few remembrances of her, but mostly it is an accepted sadness. This is life, and I find I don’t fight as I used to. I keep my mind on being grateful for Fancy having been in my life, and left me a better person. šŸ™‚ And I’ve been enormously blessed with condolence from people, just warms my heart.

  2. So sorry to hear of your loss. Your story makes me think of the loss of my baby in June. She was a mini-schnauzer, 11 years old, and quite ill for the last year, but she always put a good face on things in spite of it. It sure leaves a big hole in your heart! She liked our cat, so maybe my Molly and your Fancy are sharing memories as former Okies.

    God Bless and keep us!

    • Oh, truly, God bless and keep us! Thank you for the reminder. In my hurt, I’ve said: “No more animals in the house!” But just think if I had thought ahead 20 years, I would have lost all those wonderful years and memories. What gifts animals are to us, helping us to see ourselves, helping to open our hearts.

  3. You brought tears to my eyes, as I can relate to the depth of your loss. Our dear Bandit lived a good healthy 19 years with us and transitioned well throught 2 major moves. Even four years later, I still look for her to be sitting on the back of the sofa, looking out the window, waiting for us to come home. Our dogs, Brodey and Harley are sweethearts, but no one can take the place of our sweet Bandit. May Fancy and Bandit and all the other close furry friends be playing together on the other side. Thougths and prayers are with you and your family during this loss.

    • Thank you, dear Carolyn. We who have animal family have those one or two who are so very special. Have been thinking a lot today about our German Shepherd, and how he remains with us. Fancy had been with us about eight years when he came, and boy, was she mad for two weeks. Would not come downstairs. Then when she did, all was fine. šŸ™‚ Having an animal for all those years, it feels so odd for her not to be here. Sending hugs back to you. CurtissAnn

  4. How lucky you are to have lived with such a wonderful furfriend for so many years. I’m certain Fancy felt the same way about her furless human friends.

We are truly lucky people when we are adopted by such gentle and dignified creatures.

I hope Fancy will look up my precious Buffy, who fought a hard battle with diabetes the last 5 years of his 14 year years, but was a purring machine. . .even at times when he wasn’t feeling very chipper.

What a lovely tribute to Fancy. L, Dana

    • These pets really bring life to us. There is definitely a void that can be felt tonight. Thanks for your kind remarks, Dana. One thing about the precious Stone Rabbit– he is eternal, we hope! xxxooo CurtissAnn
